Spiritual and material culture are creations of man, they allow for the survival of mankind, the satisfaction of its needs and the development of its abilities. In the culture of the 21st century, an important task is the creation of human behaviour subordinated to common social patterns and models. Among these patterns, there is a need to pass national identity down from one generation to another generation in a skilful manner.

On 16 December 1996, the Main Board of the Society for the Memory of the Greater Poland Uprising in Poznań, considering the necessity of shaping national identity and preserving the history and significance of the Greater Poland Uprising 1918/1919 for our nation and the Polish state in the memory of society, and also wishing to inspire and honour those people and institutions which are or were distinguished in the accomplishment of the aforementioned goals through interesting and important popularisation, creative and scientific activities - established the Honorary Award: “The Drummer of the Greater Poland Uprising”.

The regulations of the aforementioned award are as follows:

Section 1

1.1 The Honorary Award of the Main Board of the Society for the Memory of the Greater Poland Uprising 1918/19 is the statuette of a drummer - an insurgent of the Greater Poland Uprising

1.2 As well as the statuette of the “Drummer”, a certificate, according to the adopted template, is bestowed [as enclosed].

Section 2

The award may be received by people and institutions that have contributed significantly to the popularisation of the knowledge and traditions of the Greater Poland Uprising 1918/19

Section 3

The award is presented once a year, during the anniversary of the outbreak of the Greater Poland Uprising 1918/19

Section 4

Candidates for the Honorary Award may be nominated by the Board of the Branch, a Circle, an individual Member of the Society or any institution interested in this distinction.

Section 5

The application of a candidate for the Award should be submitted in writing to the Main Board of the Society by the 30th of November each year.

Section 6

The application should include the personal data of the candidate and the specifications of his/her/its merits, achievements and initiatives related to the accomplishment of the goals set in the regulations.

Section 7

Under the authority of the Main Board, the Presidium shall form the Chapter of the Award: “The Drummer of the Greater Poland Uprising.”

 

The statuette of the Drummer is a miniature version of part of a monument of a drummer called the Monument of the Insurgents and Freedom in Śrem. The monument of the “Drummer” was placed on the Śrem market square on 15 November 1925. It was erected according to a design prepared by Władysław Marcinkowski. It was destroyed by the Germans on 11 September 1939. The statuette of “The Drummer of the Greater Poland Uprising” was made as a gift by Odlewnia Żeliwa”Śrem” S.A. The statue, reconstructed by Jerzy Sobociński, was unveiled on 14 June 1969 in Śrem park.
